Summary:
Features include minute, platter-shaped, bright orange-red discs that may be slightly concave, delicate white hairs that fringe the margin and inconspicuously clothe the pale orange underside, absent stem, growth with moss on burned soil, and microscopic characters.

Microscopic:
spores about 18 x 12 microns, elliptic or more often oval, colorless, containing one large oil droplet or very rarely two, 1-seriate; asci 8-spored, reaching a length of 200-225 microns and width of 16-20 microns; paraphyses reaching a width of 8 microns at tips, stout, rather freely branched, septate, often swollen near the septa, filled with orange granules; hairs reaching a length of 150-200 microns and a width of 4-6 microns, rigid, blunt when young, sharp pointed when mature, colorless, septate, (Seaver), spores 16-17 x 8-9 microns, elliptic, smooth, colorless, with one droplet; asci 8-spored, 180-200 x 18-20 microns, negative reaction with iodine; paraphyses cylindric, septate, sometimes forked, tips with slight clavate widening; hairs 160-200 x 7.5-10 microns, colorless, "smooth, thick-walled, usually with 2-3 septa, ending in a +/- blunt tip", (Breitenbach), spores 13-17 x 8-9 microns, elliptic, smooth, containing one large oil droplet; asci up to 200 x 17 microns; paraphyses up to 7 microns wide at tip, slightly clavate, with orange contents; hairs up to 200 x 15 microns, fusiform in lower part, tapering to a point, "wall smooth, 1-1.5 microns thick, lumen 0-3-septate", (Dennis), spores 16-18.5 x 10-11 microns, smooth, with one large eccentric droplet, hairs 200-400 x 4-8 microns, (Hansen)
